The practice history and information about the GP Partners

Practice History

Throughout the history of "Guisborough, Ancient Capital of Cleveland", there have been recordings of physicians who lived and practised in the town, the earliest being Bernard, Physician of York in 1154.

A previous partner, Dr Stainthorpe J.P. lived in Sunnyfield House in Westgate which he also ran as a nursing home for private patients. The surgery moved to a new Health Centre in 1971. It has continued to develop and finally moved in November 2001 to its present purpose built premises.

GP Partners

Dr Nicola Thomas joined the practice in 1994 and her interests are Medicines Management and Palliative Care.

Dr Angela Halloway joined the practice in 1997 and her interests are Gynaecology and Contraception.

March 2003 saw the arrival of Dr Sarah Lee, whose specialities include Mental Health and Plastic Surgery. Dr Lee also does regular Cryotherapy and Minor Surgery Clinic’s.

GP Partners cont...

Dr Julie-Anne Birch joined in April 2006, her interests are Asthma, COPD and Dermatology. Dr Birch is a GP Trainer who regularly has a Registrar Doctor under her supervision and she also is an active member of the LMC.

Dr Karthikeyan Shanmugam joined in 2007; his specialities are Diabetes, Musculoskeletal and ENT .Dr Shanmugam became a GP Trainer in 2015 and regularly supervises a GP Registrar he also teaches 3rd and 5th year medical students.

Dr Philippa Allan is the newest member of the practice and joined the surgery in January 2014. Her interests are Palliative Care and Women’s Health.

Training Practice

Springwood Surgery is a very pro-active training practice for GP Registrars, Final Year Doctors and Students.

We usually have 1 - 3 GP Registrars who are trained by Dr Birch and Dr Shanmugam. They are fully qualified doctors who are training to be GP’s.

Dr Lee teaches our Final Year Doctors who attend the practice at quarterly intervals and Dr Shanmugam supervises Fifth Year Students and teaches Third Year Students.
